Metal Shims

No matter what kind of machinery you are operating, or the nature of your business, you’re likely to require a shim at some stage of the process. At WC PTM Ltd, we have years of experience in manufacturing high-quality metal shims for our valued customers, who work across a wide range of industries.

Our steel shims are made of high-strength materials, meaning that they can stand the test of time. All are laser cut to standard sizes, or your own custom style.

In addition, we also supply shims in other materials including stainless, copper, Monel, Titanium, brass, and aluminium, in thicknesses ranging from 0.0254mm – 19mm depending on the grade.

What are metal shims and why are they needed?

Shims are thin, or wedged pieces of material (typically steel or plastic – More on plastic shims below) used to fill gaps between objects. They can provide a level surface or offer additional structural support. As such, they can be used for a variety of purposes, such as levelling motors, engine parts and pump parts.

They are manufactured to be incredibly durable and versatile and can often hold a high load without splintering or breaking.

Metal shims can be used for a variety of applications. They are used for levelling in areas such as in a motor mount, or pump mount, they are also used for aligning a shaft and a motor, or for lessening a gap between two parts.

What are the different shim types?

As discussed above, Metal shims are available in a wide range of styles.

Horseshoe Shims

Horseshoe shims are commonly used on door frames, and floorboards and as spacers for cabinets, shelving and more.

Custom Shims

Custom shims are often used on any type of equipment that needs precise alignment, such as engine mounts, motors and any other sort of mechanical device.

While relatively thin (in order to fit into small gaps), you can also choose the thickness of your shim depending on your specific needs. We generally supply shims in sets, so that engineers on-site have a variety of thicknesses to use, which allows them to achieve exact positioning. Our metal shims are available from 0.0254mm (0.001”) to 19mm (3/4”) depending on the chosen material.
