Why choose BS2752 Neoprene rubber gaskets for general purpose sealing?
Chloroprene was one of the original synthetic rubbers, and it earned that early reputation by covering a wide spread of desirable properties rather than excelling narrowly at one thing. The chlorine content gives it oil resistance that sits between natural rubber and nitrile, good enough for most general applications without needing to step up to a specialist grade. It resists most inorganic chemicals well, with the main exceptions being oxidising acids and halogens, and it copes with aliphatic hydrocarbons such as paraffin, grease, vegetable oils and animal fats at a moderate level.
Being manufactured to BS2752 means the material performs consistently regardless of which manufacturer supplies it, so continuity of specification is guaranteed even if your supply chain changes down the line. Water resistance is particularly strong, especially against salt water, making this a dependable choice for marine and coastal applications alongside standard industrial use.
Choosing between the four grades comes down to hardness and flexibility. C40 is the softest at 40° Shore A, offering the highest elongation at 500% for applications needing maximum flexibility. C50 sits at 50° Shore A with 450% elongation, C60 at 60° Shore A with 300% elongation, and C70 is the firmest at 70° Shore A with 400% elongation and the best abrasion resistance of the range. Softer grades suit applications where the gasket needs to conform to an uneven or irregular surface, while firmer grades hold their shape better under sustained load.
One honest limitation across all four grades: acid resistance is only fair and limited to pH 4, so anything more aggressive calls for a higher performance material. Ketone resistance is poor throughout the range as well.
