Why choose Blue-Gard® 3200 for fluid sealing?

Blue-Gard 3200 is built from aramid fibres in an SBR binder, which gives a strong, asbestos-free sheet with a tensile strength across the grain of 15 N/mm². The continuous maximum temperature is 205°C, with an absolute maximum of 371°C, and the pressure limit is 83 bar. The minimum temperature rating is -73°C, which the data sheet describes as conservative. It’s supplied for water and inert gas service, and it can handle saturated steam under the conditions covered below.

Fitted properly, it holds on well. Compressibility averages 10% with 50% recovery, and creep relaxation is 18%, so the joint keeps most of its bolt load over time. The sheet meets ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) specifications and MIL-DTL-24696 Type II, which suits marine and military specification work as well as general industry. Product branded to MIL-DTL-24696 needs certification requesting at the time of order, and fees apply depending on quantity, so mention it when you enquire.

Thickness affects the working limits. The maximum pressure × temperature rating is 12,000 bar × °C for 1/32″ and 1/16″ sheet and 8,600 bar × °C for 1/8″ sheet, and 1/16″ is strongly preferred. The maximum pressure and maximum temperature can’t both be used at once.

One honest limitation: steam needs care. The data sheet says this style isn’t a preferred choice for steam service, although it works when adequately compressed. The minimum recommended assembly stress is about 33 N/mm² (4,800 psi), with 41 to 69 N/mm² (6,000 to 10,000 psi) preferred, and the bolts or studs should be re-torqued before the joint is pressurised. For saturated steam above 150 psig (roughly 10 bar) or any superheated steam, speak to us before specifying. The same applies when you’re approaching the maximum pressure or temperature, or 50% of the maximum pressure × temperature rating.
