Why choose butyl rubber?
Butyl stands apart from other elastomers because of its very low resilience. Where most rubbers spring back quickly, butyl absorbs energy, which makes it the material of choice for vibration damping and shock absorption applications. If your gasket needs to quieten movement between components as well as seal them, butyl does both jobs at once.
Its chemical profile is strong too, with excellent resistance to water and alkalis, very good resistance to acids and good resistance to ketones. Excellent ozone resistance and ageing properties mean it holds its performance over long service lives outdoors, and the operating range of -40°C to +130°C is the widest of our EPDM and butyl grades. At 60° Shore A it is also softer than our EPDM gaskets, allowing it to conform to lower quality or uneven flange faces.
Butyl offers poor resistance to oils, fuels and petroleum based solvents, so for those applications nitrile remains the better option.
