Why choose FDA White FKM for high temperature food and process applications?
FKM, sometimes known by the trade name Viton, is a speciality fluoroelastomer used almost exclusively where standard rubbers simply can’t cope with the heat. This grade holds up to 250°C continuous service, well beyond what nitrile or EPDM can offer, and it backs that up with excellent resistance to water, acids, oils, fuels and petroleum solvents. Its 18% compression set after 22 hours at 200°C shows genuinely strong recovery even after sustained high temperature exposure, which is exactly the kind of performance that justifies its higher price point.
On compliance, all ingredients in this formulation have been checked against the latest CFR21 FDA 177-2600 ingredient listings and are present at permitted levels, and the grade also complies with EC1935/2004. As with any rubber compound, it’s worth noting that formal FDA approval applies to the raw materials used rather than the finished compound itself, so this reflects ingredient compliance rather than a blanket product certification.
One honest limitation: while resistance to fuels and petroleum solvents is excellent, this grade has only limited resistance to biofuels, so it’s worth checking your specific fuel blend before specifying it for that application. It also has poor resistance to ketones and chlorinated solvents need care too, despite the material’s broad chemical resistance elsewhere.
