Why choose FKM for high temperature and chemical resistant applications?
FKM, often known by the trade name Viton, is a speciality fluoroelastomer reserved for applications that genuinely need it, rather than a general purpose material. This grade offers excellent resistance to water, acids and oils, alongside good resistance to alkalis, and a continuous service range of -20°C to +220°C that comfortably exceeds what nitrile, EPDM or neoprene can handle. Ozone resistance is excellent too, so long term outdoor exposure isn’t a concern.
Because FKM is a high priced speciality polymer, it tends to get specified almost exclusively where very high temperature resistance is required alongside resistance to petroleum and chlorinated solvents, rather than being used as a default choice for general sealing. Where those conditions genuinely apply, the extra cost is usually justified by service life and reliability that a standard rubber simply can’t match.
