Why choose Garlock 9900 for high pressure steam and oil service?
Garlock 9900 is made from carbon fibres held in an NBR binder, and it’s asbestos free. The nitrile binder is what sets it apart from the 9800, which uses SBR, because it brings oils, aliphatic hydrocarbons and gasoline into the service range alongside saturated steam, water and inert gases. The continuous maximum temperature is 343°C, with an absolute maximum of 537°C, and the pressure limit is 138 bar. The minimum temperature rating is -75°C, which the data sheet describes as conservative.
Its physical figures suggest a gasket that stays tight. Creep relaxation is only 9%, so almost all of the bolt load is retained over time, and compressibility averages 9% with 55% recovery. Tensile strength across the grain is 12 N/mm². Leakage testing was also low, at 0.30 ml/hr with Fuel A and 0.015 cc/min with nitrogen under DIN 3535. The sheet meets ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) specifications and STR 508(5) Rev. 2, and it’s listed as fire safe.
Thickness and assembly both affect the working limits. The maximum pressure × temperature rating is 25,000 bar × °C for 1/32″ and 1/16″ sheet and falls to 12,000 bar × °C for 1/8″ sheet, and 1/16″ is strongly preferred. For assembly, the sheet recommends a minimum stress of about 33 N/mm² (4,800 psi), with 41 to 69 N/mm² (6,000 to 10,000 psi) preferred, and the bolts or studs should be re-torqued before the joint is pressurised.
