Why choose Nomex Reinforced FKM for extreme environments?
This grade takes the same high fluorine content FKM chemistry used in speciality high temperature sealing and reinforces it with a layer of Nomex meta-aramid fabric, giving the finished material genuinely better tear resistance and dimensional stability than an unreinforced FKM sheet of the same thickness. It carries excellent resistance to water, acids and oils, along with good resistance to alkalis, and continuous service up to 204°C. Ozone resistance is excellent too, so weathering isn’t a concern even in prolonged outdoor or exposed installations.
The Nomex reinforcement bonds to the rubber with a rated adhesion of 3.7 Kgf per 25mm, strong enough that the fabric and rubber behave as one material under load rather than being prone to delamination. That added strength is exactly why this grade gets specified over standard FKM in applications facing mechanical stress on top of chemical exposure, such as high pressure flanges or installations where the gasket takes repeated handling.
As with standard FKM, this is a high priced speciality polymer, so it tends to get reserved for applications that genuinely need very high temperature resistance alongside resistance to petroleum and chlorinated solvents, rather than being used as a general purpose material.
One honest limitation: while resistance to fuels and petroleum solvents is excellent, this grade has only limited resistance to biofuels, so it’s worth checking your specific fuel blend before specifying it for that application.
