Why choose Viton™ A for high temperature and fuel resistant sealing?
Viton™ A is the general purpose grade of the Chemours fluoroelastomer family. It’s a copolymer of vinylidene fluoride and hexafluoropropylene with a minimum fluorine content of 66%. That fluorine content is what allows it to keep sealing in conditions where hydrocarbon rubbers swell or harden. Resistance to water, acids, fuels and petroleum solvents is rated excellent. Alkalis and oils come in at good, and ozone resistance is excellent, so outdoor exposure poses no problem.
Heat is where this grade really earns its place. Continuous service up to +250°C puts it well beyond the reach of nitrile or EPDM, and it can cope with intermittent spikes to +315°C. A tear resistance of 28 N/mm gives it reasonable toughness during fitting and in service.
It is a high priced speciality polymer. In practice it gets specified where very high temperatures and petroleum-based media come together, rather than as an everyday sealing choice. In those conditions, the longer service life usually justifies the cost.
