Rubber gaskets do a quiet but critical job. They sit between components, hold back fluids and gases, and keep machinery running as it should. The problem is that because they’re often hidden away, wear and deterioration can go unnoticed until something goes wrong. Knowing what to look for can save you from unplanned downtime and costly repairs, and our team here at PTM can help.
The most obvious sign that a rubber gasket is past its best is visible deterioration. Cracking, splitting or a hardened surface texture are all indicators that the material has aged beyond its useful life. Rubber that was once pliable and compressible becomes brittle over time, and a brittle seal simply cannot do its job properly.
Leaks are another clear signal. If fluid or gas is escaping from a joint that was previously watertight, the seal has most likely lost its ability to compress and recover effectively. Don’t assume a leak is always a fitting or connection issue before checking the seal itself.
Swelling or distortion is worth watching for too. Some rubber compounds react to certain chemicals or fluids, causing the material to swell out of shape. If a seal no longer looks like it should, that’s reason enough to replace it.
A reactive approach to seal replacement is a false economy. If a seal fails mid-operation, the knock-on costs in downtime, wasted materials and potential damage to surrounding components can far outweigh the price of a straightforward replacement carried out at a planned maintenance interval.
If you operate in a demanding environment, whether that involves high temperatures, chemical exposure or significant pressure, it pays to factor seal inspection into your regular maintenance schedule rather than leaving it to chance.
Sometimes gaskets fail prematurely not because of age but because the wrong material was specified in the first place. Different rubber compounds have very different tolerances. Nitrile performs well with oils. Silicone handles temperature extremes. EPDM is suited to water and steam applications. If you’re replacing a seal that has failed earlier than expected, it’s worth questioning whether the original specification was correct.
