Canal Set to re-open

After being closed since October 2019 to allow for major repairs to the canal following several leaks, it is welcomed that the re-opening date has been brought forwards to 13th March 2020.

Following the recent leakage, the contractors started the work in the area from 16th October.

The repairs included a canal bed relining scheme on a 80m section of the canal between Bridges 26 (Sugar Lane Bridge) and 27 (Kerridge Road Bridge), together with 66m of wash wall re-build near Clarence Mill.

The statement below is from the Canal & River Trust.

Repairs to Palmerston Street Embankment are going well and canal navigation will re-open at 4pm, Friday 13 March as planned, however the towpath will remain closed to carry out the remaining works until 4pm, Friday 3 April.

We politely request no mooring between Bridges 26, Sugar Lane Bridge and 26A, Clarence Mill Footbridge to allow our contractors to safely carry out their works.

Access to Clarence Mill, via the towpath, will be maintained from the east for the duration of the works.
